What is OPTICLEAN
OPTICLEAN polymer was developed to clean and protect silicon wafers during the exacting manufacturing processes they go through to create microchips.
How does OPTICLEAN work
OPTICLEAN is a molecular cleaning system. As the polymer cures it shrinks and absorbs any contamination on the lens surface into the polymer molecule. This includes particulates as well as fingerprints, grease, oil and atmospheric pollution. When the cured film is peeled away the polymer takes all the absorbed contaminants with it leaving a molecularly clean surface.
Why is OPTICLEAN better than conventional cleaning
Most cleaning systems require wiping the lens with the risk of scratching if there are any small hard particles of contamination on the surface. Wet cleaning systems leave a residual smear. This smear counteracts the effect of the antireflection coating on the surface of the lens, effectively softening the focus and contrast of the image. OPTICLEAN is non-abrasive and leaves a perfectly clean surface.
Why should I spend £9 on a lens cleaner
Preparation and quality control combine to create high costs in the production of OPTICLEAN. However, as so little is used to clean camera lenses the standard Professional Pack lasts for a long time. Users find that one pack will clean both the front and back elements of more than 12 typical standard lenses. This makes the cost per element less than 30 pence. This compares favourably to the cost of conventional cleaning methods. However, the real value that OPTICLEAN offers is that it is the only way to maintain the full performance of lenses and mirrors with no accumulative damage from abrasion and smear build up.
Painting a polymer on a valuable lens seems very risky!
The most sophisticated optics users in the world are using OPTICLEAN routinely to clean astronomical and laser optics with no problems. Many of the major camera and lens manufacturers have tested and approved OPTICLEAN for use on their lenses.
Will OPTICLEAN damage lens coatings
The polymer is used in many major Observatories around the world as well as many laser labs to clean and protect multi-coated and silvered optics. These applications are exceptionally sensitive to damage and there are no reports of damage yet on record.
Why do I need to have a perfectly clean lens
Ahigh quality modern camera lens has a very sophisticated antireflection coating on the surface. This coating reduces flare from multiple reflections between the lens elements. Any smear or build up of contamination reduces the efficiency of the lens coating.
Can I really clean silvered mirrors with no risk
The only really safe way to clean mirrors in SLR cameras is with the polymer. As the polymer only flows on to the surface of the mirror it does not drag any contamination with it. This means that is possible to clean the mirror without damage using OPTICLEAN.
Is OPTICLEAN used to clean any other types of optics
OPTICLEAN is used to clean almost every optical surface available. Laser gyro mirrors are perhaps the most perfect surface made by man. The deviation from flatness over a one inch mirror is equivalent to less than one foot variation in height over an area the size of the UK. OPTI-CLEAN is the cleaning method of choice for these mirrors. Many manufacturers of coated surfaces are now using OPTICLEAN as the cleaning system to prepare the surface. This has been shown to be equal to or better than the automated ultrasonic CFC based system commonly used to produce the level of cleanliness needed for this application.
Why does OPTICLEAN only clean to one millimetre from the edge of the lens
The polymer can be used right out to the edge of the glass surface. We recommend stopping one millimetre away to minimise the possibility of the polymer flowing on to the lens mount. With a little practice and care it is quite simple to clean right out to the edge if necessary.
If I accidentally get OPTICLEAN on the lens mount how do I remove it
If the polymer is allowed to flow on to the lens mount it may prove difficult to remove. This is because the polymer shrinks as it cures and will key into the detail on the lens mount. The polymer is hydrophyllic and can be softened with the application of a touch of water. A wooden toothpick dipped in water and shaken dry, will bring enough water to the film to soften it and allow it to be lifted away.
What is the D test
To show how well OPTICLEAN cleans and how dirty a lens was before cleaning we recommend cleaning only one half as a demonstration. By cleaning a D shaped section it is easy to see how much contamination has been removed from the surface by OPTICLEAN.
What happens if the cured polymer is left on the lens for more than two minutes
In many industrial applications the polymer is left on for long periods of time - many months in some cases. The cured film is rugged and slightly pliable giving good protection against fingerprints, atmospheric contamination and any other minor hazards. The film can be removed just as easily after two weeks as after two minutes.
What happens on plastic materials
The solvents used to hold the polymer in solution are acetone, ethanol and ethyl acetate. Some, but not all, plastic materials are soluble in one or more of these solvents. As an example plastic spectacle lenses and most plastic camera lenses are normally impervious to the solvents. For safety we recommend that you do not use OPTICLEAN on any other plastic component especially viewfinders.
Will OPTICLEAN damage a lens mount
Lens mounts are not normally plastic and are unlikely to be damaged in any way by the polymer.
If I always keep a filter on my lens why would I need to clean it
Even with a filter permanently in place there are many sources of contamination that form a coating on the lens surface. These come from the lubricant in the filter threads, the atmosphere and even from within the lens assembly itself. Over time - a few weeks is enough - they form a layer, which negates the antireflection coating and softens the focus of the lens. This type of coating is difficult to see as it forms such a uniform layer. The D test shows the effect very well.
What do the major camera and lens manufacturers say about using OPTICLEAN
Most major manufacturers have evaluated OPTICLEAN and cleared it for use on their equipment.
What happens if I use up all the adhesive tabs
The adhesive tabs supplied are chosen based on the adhesive being strong enough to lift the cured OPTICLEAN film. Any adhesive tape or label with a good adhesive may be used. Or contact us and we will be pleased to send you more support@caliope.co.uk
Other applications
As well as cleaning camera lenses and mirrors OPTICLEAN is very effective in cleaning enlarger lenses, projection lenses and glass negative carriers - in fact any glass or metal optical surface that needs to be really clean.
